There are some interesting insights one can deduce from those few radio
transmissions. You may have already done this, but if not, here is what
struck me right off:
It definitely seems like a possible 2 ship formation (Camino 48 and 04).
Unless the 48 was an error in listening to the tape. Later, the third voice
talks in the context of being one of the aircraft and states "we."
A 2 ship formation would strike me as an operational aircraft. If only
experimental, then traditionally they would fly single ship (?). However,
maybe there was some kind of chase aircraft, or these are unique aircraft,
few in number, but have been flying long enough that in 1994 they were
operating in an operational profile. Sounds a lot like the 117s before they
went public.
Based on previous photos on the web from A51, it would seem that test flying
of adversary aircraft has taken place not only from Tonopah, but from A51
also. I remember one grainy photo that was definitely of a Chinese built F5
(?), anyway the Chinese version of a Mig-19. So it might be possible that
Camino flight was some of the latest in this category (?).
The last tidbit is that the tower asks if the pilot is familiar with
Frenchman Flats (an obvious visual point in the local pattern). If these
aircraft had come from A51, then why would they not be familiar with the
pattern? So what kind of aircraft that are not for Glenn Campbell eyes,
would operate out of a location different to Area51 in 1994? Or possibly,
this was another General taking a Mig for a spin (so he is not familiar with
the pattern). But I thought after enough brass killed themselves in those
tin cans they would have stopped that by '94?
Hmmmm. Dunno. Fun puzzle though. Cheers.
